Beginning my Path to Medicine: How do I feel about NSAID'S?

New Orleans has been one transformative experience for me. Adjusting to the unfamiliar surroundings, immersing myself in the local culture, connecting with neighboring communities, and embracing this new chapter of my life have all been significant aspects of this journey.

Studying NSAIDs and acetaminophen in Medical Pharmacology has been unexpectedly fascinating. At first, it seemed like just another lecture on drugs, but as the days went by, the relevance of these medications in our daily lives became apparent.

Growing up, I never paid much attention to what went into the medicines I took. Headache? Pop an aspirin. Fever? Grab some acetaminophen. Little did I know, these seemingly harmless pills had a more profound impact on health than I ever imagined. In class, we delved into the mechanisms of action of NSAIDs and acetaminophen, learning about their effects on pain and inflammation. It was eye-opening to see how these drugs interact with our bodies on a molecular level. As I absorbed the information, I couldn't help but reflect on my own experiences.

A few months ago, my grandmother, a warm and lively woman, passed away. She passed away the day she was supposed to be discharged from the hospital. As I have learned more about NSAIDs, I couldn't help but wonder if the medications she had taken had unintended consequences. The class discussions on potential side effects and long-term impacts of these drugs triggered a realization. Could the painkillers she relied on have contributed to the later onset of symptoms that led to her death? It was a sobering thought, connecting the dots between the academic knowledge gained in class and the real-life consequences that unfolded within my family.

Medical Pharmacology class has transformed a seemingly mundane topic into a personal exploration of the medicines that fill our medicine cabinets. As I continue my studies, I can't help but approach each lesson with a newfound curiosity and a deeper understanding of the profound effects these medications can have on our lives.
