A Ray of Hope: Volunteering with Cancer Survivors in Lagos

November Community Service Hours: 6 Hours

Total Fall Community Service Hours: 12 Hours

Location: Lagos, Nigeria

As the semester was ending, I focused on our final module about carcinogens. Wanting to connect what I learned with real-world impact, I decided to volunteer with cancer survivors in Lagos, Nigeria. The city provided a unique setting for an experience that impacted both the survivors and me.

During my short stay in Nigeria, I met a diverse group of survivors with inspiring stories. They faced various types of cancer, from breast cancer to leukemia, giving me a better understanding of the challenges they go through. My goal was to provide support and learn from their experiences.

One particular day, we organized an event at a community center in Lagos to raise awareness about carcinogens, emphasizing prevention and importance of a healthy lifestyle. The survivors shared their stories, emphasizing the importance of early detection and support.

We started the event with a local oncologist explaining the impact of carcinogens on the body. The survivors then shared their triumphs and tribulations, showing that cancer is more than a medical condition; it's a battle that requires immense courage and community support.

Throughout the event, attendees engaged in discussion about carcinogens, lifestyle choices, and the survivor's experiences. The survivors found strength in educating others and breaking down the stigma associated with cancer.

Our efforts continued beyond the event. We teamed up with local healthcare professionals to organize regular workshops on healthy living and cancer prevention. The survivors became advocates, visiting schools and community centers to share their stories and raise awareness.

As the semester concluded, I reflected on the impact of this volunteering experience. It wasn't just about completing a module; it was about applying that knowledge to make a real difference in the lives of those affected by cancer. The survivors, once uncertain about their future, now stood as beacons of hope, and I felt privileged to have played a small part in their journey.

Inspired by this, I reached out to a local cancer support organization and joined group of survivors navigating life after treatment through weekly support sessions.
